If, however, he doesnt hatch within twelve hours (which unfortunately it may have already been twelve hours or more since I only check my comments once or twice a day), you may wish to start assisting. Sadly the little one died I had a look inside once we were sure, and it seems his egg sac hadnt bee absorbed, so I dont know if we could have done much to help. And finally, too much calcium in the mothers diets can cause shells that are too hard for the ducklings to crack through. Humidity is quite important, and improper humidity is a very common cause of hatching problems. Ducklings stay 50-60 days with their mother. On the inside of one it looks like the beak is in the air sac but inside the other one it doesnt look like its gotten that far and Ive marked the air sac on the outside of the shell. There was a lot of dark yellowish goopy stuff within the shell that we could see and attached to him when he finally came out. However, we saw a teeny tiny bit of blood the size of a beauty spot, or even smaller. This is my first time incubating, and I have a few specific questions that I couldnt find answers to in your other responses. Glad to know I dont have to worry about the humidity!! A half full water trough will provide as much humidity as a full one, it just will run out faster. Would be grateful of advice. Pipping on the wrong end either kills them very quickly (if there is no air cell and they hit a blood vessel), or doesnt affect them much other than possibly making it hard for them to zip and escape the egg. Thats usually a sign an egg is rotten or dead and will probably soon explode all over the incubator. The eggs are 4 days over due. I wouldnt assist. Start with taking off the shell above the air cell since there are never blood vessels there, and if you dont see any blood vessels in the membrane, you should be able to continue until youve removed enough shell that the duckling can easily slip out when its ready. Then one egg pips! Sorry for the late reply. It was pretty busy early on this morning and cracked the egg. Humidity is a tricky thing to get right, but its one of the most important factors to a successful hatch. Ducks lack that ability. If its growing too slowly, the humidity is too high.
